Evolving teaching and learning

Should I redesign my course?

Identifying the reasons for your course redesign is the first step in this process. By identifying the reasons, whether it is to better align course outcomes to meeting program goals, or to improve DFW rates in a specific course, it will help to identify the correct action to take.  Consider it as accurately diagnosing the problem in order to select the right solution and maximizing the effort you put into the course redesign. Some questions to ask yourself:

What “crises” or “challenges” prompted a consideration of course transformation?  What is the purpose or intention driving course redesign?

  • A need for better integration of course components?
  1. Reading
  2. Lecture
  3. Homework
  • Align curricula?
  • Incorporate more opportunities for active learning?
  • Need to reduce DFW rates?
  • Desire to improve retention of fundamental concepts or skills in downstream courses?
