Media-enhanced
  • What is it?  Integration of activities, often driven by technology, to enhance student participation and engagement.
  • What happens in class?  Short presentations are interspersed with problem solving, clicker-driven questions / answers, and teamwork in small groups.
  • How does this approach benefit students?  Promoting interaction provides ways to generate student engagement with material and introduces new opportunities to integrate facts with concepts and practice skills.
Blackboard-enhanced
  • What is it?  A course that makes extensive use of a learning management system (LMS), such as Blackboard, to deliver course documents and other learning materials.
  • What happens in class?  Use of class time is generally unchanged.
  • How does this approach benefit students?  The LMS provides easy access to course materials and allows for regular communication with students about grades and academic progress.
Flipped
  • What is it?  Basic concepts and background materials are delivered to students outside of class (e.g., via online presentations and other interactive media), using class time for problem solving and application of knowledge.
  • What happens in class?  Amount of class time does not change. Students work as individuals or as teams in small groups to solve problems and apply concepts to challenging questions.
  • How does this approach benefit students?  Students work at own pace outside of class to become familiar with foundational material and develop skills. Time in class enables direct contact and assistance with more challenging application and problem solving.
Hybrid
  • What is it?  A course that blends online delivery of course materials with a reduction in in-class time. The reduction in face-to-face time varies considerably (25-50% or more).
  • What happens in class?  Problem solving and group projects are emphasized. Students work as teams in small groups and have direct access to instructors and other expert guides.
  • How does this approach benefit students?  Students use online delivery to reach a common foundation at their own pace. Face-to-face class time is devoted to application of this foundation of knowledge to complete challenging assignments with access to expert help. Working in teams enhances deeper, more long-lasting learning.
