Your content can be enhanced by using different types of media such as PowerPoint, video or audio recordings, images or iClickers. Integrating media appeals to different types of learners and can be used to explain concepts, provide examples, demonstrate techniques, or present different perspectives.
PowerPoint, is a tool in which content can be added to slides and presented to students.
PowerPoint generally includes an outline of the lecture which can also be enhanced with visuals. The real content should come from the spoken lecture prompting students to take notes and remain engaged.
Consider using “bullet points” to present key concepts or topics rather than full paragraphs. Thus, you will avoid falling into the trap of reading to your audience (a frustrating practice since we can all read) and they also serve as reminders of what points you would like to expand upon.
Video or Audio Recordings
There are several ways to add video or audio to your course:
The KU Library System has many films freely available through different film collections managed by the library. If you find a video you would like to include, contact the library for help adding it to your course or lecture material.
If the film you wish to show is not available in these collections, it may be available in the library’s film collection or available for purchase. The library can work with you to find obtain copyright clearance for the film.

CODL eLearning Support Specialists can assist you in creating and editing your own. Recording equipment, sound booth and studio are available to faculty along with personnel to help with video creation.
Images also provide visual representations to assist with student learning. Images can include photos, diagrams, charts, graphs or other visual representations.
A clicker is a device that students bring to class which allows them to respond to questions by selecting the option on the clicker. This can provide immediate assessment of learning and also lead to impromptu discussions to clarify concepts or review information.

Transitioning from a traditional classroom format to a Media-enhanced format:
An instructor has fully scripted lecture notes used to deliver content in a classroom setting and would like to transition the course content into a Media-enhanced format. The instructor’s scripted lecture notes were used as the basis for a backward design model to create course and modules objectives collaboratively with an instructional designer. Content was chunked into segments that allowed for the development of a SoftChalk production. Reinforcement strategies, approved by the instructor, were built into the SoftChalk production to support student:content interaction. Additionally, video vignettes selected by the instructor were strategically placed throughout the course to support content, visuals were added to align with subject matter and vary the delivery format of information, as well as heighten the sense of departmental presence. Audio samples were included to bring textual content to life and allow students to experience various cultural languages and environments.
